While our main focus for Christmas break has been to teach and share traditions with our children, we try to squeeze in a bit of travel fun too. This time, we were lucky enough to travel with a group of friends to Oberreit, Austria which is just outside of Zell Am See. We stayed in quaint little cabins where each family had their own. It was perfect. The kids ran from cabin to cabin, playing outside and having fun, while the adults gathered in one living room, chatting and laughing as we do best. We spent the first day in Salzburg where we captured pieces of Mozart's life--birthplace, house in later life. We walked the Christmas market, kids ice skated in the plaza (4.50 Euros per child), and we finished the day with a horse drawn carriage ride. The second day we signed the kids up for ski school where they went from novices to advanced beginners. They had such a great time. We were a bit worried they wouldn't want to go back for day 2, but they were eager little students. Chris and I spent some time with our friends the first day, but tried to introduce Gavin to the world of sledding the second. He wasn't so convinced it was fun. After a few tears were shed he was sold.
On the way back to Germany, we stopped at the longest pedestrian suspension foot bridge in the world--Highline 179. It was about a mile long hike up to the bridge, a walk across, then back and down the mountain to our car. It was crazy high. Chris was petrified. Mya, Gavin and I were unfazed, taking in the amazing views. Claire had a few moments of fear take over her, but managed to push through. It was well worth the stop. Because I also like to keep notes on cost of activities--24 Euros for our family of 5 to cross.
This is the cabin where we stayed. 2 bedrooms with a kitchenette and living room. |
