2013 Reflection

Wow, it is hard to believe 2013 is done and gone. It was such a mixed year for us.

We suffered two miscarriages, immeasurable heartache and stress as we weren't certain our hopes to expand our family would come to fruition.

We settled into a new house, made it our home and fell in love with our little neighborhood where our neighbors are like our family.

We took our first cruise to Greece and Croatia, traveled to Venice, Italy three times, Florence, Pisa, Cinque Terra, Belgium twice, Netherlands, France, England, Portugal & Morocco.  10 countries in a year is pretty amazing!

Claire learned how to read fluently and is now reading at a 3rd grade level.

Mya has learned all of her letters, the sounds they make and can blend sounds to read words as well. She is officially a beginner reader.

Both girls are doing amazingly well at swimming. They love the water and can front crawl like no other.

Claire has developed a love for soccer and is now competing in U-7 district soccer which is pretty competitive.

I finished my Autism Certification, which will open doors for our future.

We learned our family is expecting a much prayed for, much hoped for baby boy.

An early retirement opportunity has presented itself for Chris. After much discussion, we've decided to apply. It may seem to some that this is a poor decision, but the fact is that Chris is rarely home with our family. We have or will have three small children who need their parents now. Now is the time that we have them to ourselves. Before we know it, they will be off with their friends, participating in crazy sports schedules and doing homework for the remainder of their free time. We are also looking at our future deployment/assignments. Truth be told that we will look at 1, possibly 2 deployments in the next 5 years. This would be combined with an insanely busy schedule (15 hour days). The money/benefit isn't that much different. We both have Master's degrees and will likely find employment should we leave Germany. Right now our risk is minimal. I have a great job that can more than sustain our family and it includes a housing allowance that will solely cover our rent and utilities on our current house. This minimal risk would not be the case in 5 years as I'd have already resigned from DODDS. This is a leap. It is not guaranteed. Chris could be denied and we'd ride out the remaining time with the military. That is fine too. This story is yet to unfold.

All in all, 2013 has been a pretty great year for our family. Our prayers have been answered with a year of good health and overflowing happiness.

We look forward to seeing what 2014 may hold.

It would be a good thing in my heart if Chris could retire early. Although the military has been a good benefit, he has worked hard to achieve.
You guys do not have a lot of time together and I am sure he would love the extra time with the children.
I hope he can, but it is also good to know that you are open for whatever the future may hold.

Love you guys,

Kara,
Not sure how you do it all. I admire your ability to do it all. Those girls of yours are so lucky too have you. Pregnancy is hard and somehow you still manage to keep everything running smoothly. We love you and miss you. Wish we could see you all this Christmas but we will look forward to this summer!

Love ya, J

0.0

Yes, indeeedy do. 0.0 is exactly the amount of weight I lost this week. Irritating! Here's the breakdown: number of times I cheated on my diet--ZERO! number of times I worked out--FIVE!! (running, no less). Now that is a mean, mean slap in the face. After I picked myself off the floor and resisted the urge to throw the scale through my window, I've come to realize that it is time to call in the big guns. There will be no messing around. Through a very valuable (HA!--sense the sarcasm) inservice this year, I've learned that I am "Green," meaning logical, research based, problem solver, mathmatical thinker. I am applying the same thought and strategy to my 'get fit' adventure. There will be no relying on the treadmill to tell me how much I've burned. That thing lies, LIES, LIES!! Take for example, the fact that each time I worked out, I burned at least 300 calories--most often 350, my pulse was around 87 (which is pretty much a near death resting ...

7 weeks

7 weeks has brought a couple of changes for sweet baby Mya. She is eating 5+ ounces of milk/feeding. Mya is much more awake now. She typically sleeps for about 4 hours during the day, otherwise is checking out this big bad world. Mya seems to enjoy our daily walks. She looks around and is a pretty content kiddo. Claire tends to her pacis if the need arises. We've introduced her to the activity mat, which she enjoys if she is left alone; however, given the fact that Claire too is fascinated by the mat and Mya, being left alone is a rare occurence. Mya sits in the swing daily, although she isn't a huge fan at this point. We're hoping to change her ways. She is strong, holding her head for minutes at a time and loves standing on her little feet. Mya has begun smiling. She has done this consistently for the past several days, but it is difficult to capture such an event on film as she stops smiling the moment you break eye-contact. This milestone is such a heart melting one. Th...

Bouncing Crazyiness!

I do alot of online shopping. When you live overseas, you have to. The BX is thrilling, yes, but it changes out the merchandise only so often ;) When it comes to clothing, if you shop at the BX (which I do as well), you can be guaranteed that at least 3 other people will be seen in the same item. Take for example this little gray vest that I bought. The other day, 2 other teachers showed up in the same one. Thankfully, I hadn't worn mine that day, but you get the point. Anyway, several places do not ship overseas. That's where my Mom comes in. I typically have the stuff mailed to her house and she graciously mails it to us. Readdressing the boxes, running to the post office and mailing our stuff is a major pain. I know this, but she's been so great about it. Priority mail is the way to go. She generally mails it priority and we recieve it in a week to ten days. However, I ordered a "jumpy jump" as Claire calls it, well before Christmas. Since it was so heavy and s...
