Chris Update

I finally talked to Chris last night and gathered some details of his training. He is currently in a tent, sleeping on bunkbeds with the 22 other guys. They have to walk three tent lengths to go to the restroom, which is a port a potty in a tent. He says they just began heating the "bathrooms" yesterday despite the cold temps on previous days. He walks to another tent to shower. There is a building for the chowhall, which does have television, so he's been able to keep up with the world news. One day they practiced riding in convoys, identifying roadside bombs, another day walking through town desiphering the "good" guys from "bad" guys and shooting appropriately. Soon they will be practicing riding in a convoy through live fire. I thought it sounded rather interesting, but I suppose it is in practice--not so much live. He thinks he may wrap up training a day earlier, which would allow Claire and I to meet him for a night. Although he continues to say not to get my hopes up. Hos can I not?? We are so excited at this thought. The thought of being together for just one day would be a wish come true! If this is the case, our plans will fall into place as we had talked about finding out the sex of our baby by having the tech write it on a card and opening it together over dinner. We found out with Claire, but felt it was very impersonal. I am happy that something looks to be falling into place. I just returned from a spa day with friends. It was fantastically relaxing. Much needed!

I am so glad to hear that things seem to be falling into place, somewhat, for you guys. I am also happy to hear that you will most likely be able to see him again before he leaves. That is awesome. Jennifer and I talk about you guys and your situation quite often and I want to acknowledge the amount of strength and courage you have. I don't know what I would do if Jen had to leave for 7 months and vice versa. You are an amazing mom and wife kara. You are always in our thoughts and prayers as is Chris.

Love ya's,
Uncle Dan

Thanks, Dan. Thankfully, I come from a long line of strong, independent women. Regardless, the fact is that Chris and I signed up for this knowing that a deployment was certainly possible if not likely. We will push through this and then re-evaluate what we would like our future to look like.

Hmmm, Montana. Chris woke this morning to a temp of 29 degrees with an overnight low of 32 below. He claims he's rethinking any midwest move. I'm sure he'll quickly forget, however.

The cold is so bad in Maine that I am thinking a mid-west move might be in order. Plus I hear there are some great people out there that I feel like I know even though I have never met them!

Glad to hear that you were able to enjoy the day at the spa - pampering you deserve!

Yes, indeeedy do. 0.0 is exactly the amount of weight I lost this week. Irritating! Here's the breakdown: number of times I cheated on my diet--ZERO! number of times I worked out--FIVE!! (running, no less). Now that is a mean, mean slap in the face. After I picked myself off the floor and resisted the urge to throw the scale through my window, I've come to realize that it is time to call in the big guns. There will be no messing around. Through a very valuable (HA!--sense the sarcasm) inservice this year, I've learned that I am "Green," meaning logical, research based, problem solver, mathmatical thinker. I am applying the same thought and strategy to my 'get fit' adventure. There will be no relying on the treadmill to tell me how much I've burned. That thing lies, LIES, LIES!! Take for example, the fact that each time I worked out, I burned at least 300 calories--most often 350, my pulse was around 87 (which is pretty much a near death resting ...

my workout playlist

I never dreamed I'd be listening/watching this when I worked out, but it is true. Here it is: photo courtesty of Laurieberkner.com I wouldn't have it any other way. My little healthy lifestyle journey is going well. I have exercised 7 days thus far which consists of treadmill activity and an ab workout every other day. I don't pressure myself to run everyday, but I have run 4 of the 7 days. I am quite proud of that. I have never been a runner or enjoyed running, but I have grown to like it. I used to say that I had exercise induced asthma! I think I did, but maybe I outgrew it? ha. Whatever the reason, I am finding it pretty easy to run and maintain a steady pace for no less than 20 minutes each time. Pretty impressive feat for a girl like me. Interestingly, I had planned to take today off, but didn't. I actually had the desire to run. Chris and I are both sticking to the eating plan as well. So far I am down about 4 pounds. Although 4 pounds is plenty, it ...

Bouncing Crazyiness!

I do alot of online shopping. When you live overseas, you have to. The BX is thrilling, yes, but it changes out the merchandise only so often ;) When it comes to clothing, if you shop at the BX (which I do as well), you can be guaranteed that at least 3 other people will be seen in the same item. Take for example this little gray vest that I bought. The other day, 2 other teachers showed up in the same one. Thankfully, I hadn't worn mine that day, but you get the point. Anyway, several places do not ship overseas. That's where my Mom comes in. I typically have the stuff mailed to her house and she graciously mails it to us. Readdressing the boxes, running to the post office and mailing our stuff is a major pain. I know this, but she's been so great about it. Priority mail is the way to go. She generally mails it priority and we recieve it in a week to ten days. However, I ordered a "jumpy jump" as Claire calls it, well before Christmas. Since it was so heavy and s...
